St Mary de Haura

This is a Norman and early English transitional church situated near my old grammar school. I first saw it when I was barely eleven but was immediately taken with its mellow stone structure and the way it blended with its environment. I have, since my younger days, drawn it many times and from many angles, but I think this effort is probably the best.

It is of interest to note that during an unprecedently violent storm in the eighteenth century, the long nave was destroyed - the remains of which can still be seen in the surrounding graveyard. The church today is only the eastern end of the original cross-shaped structure.
