I couldn’t have been more than six at the time. My uncle in America - Walter - used to regularly send food parcels to help relieve the strict rationing prevalent in England at the time.

Along with these parcels he would send me American comics – the images in which so grabbed my attention.

I felt drawn to copy them and the pictures below are the result. Even at that stage, I derived a great deal of pleasure from drawing and painting.
