North of the South Downs

I had gone to Steyning in Sussex to collect my young son from his evening class, and, arriving early, I’d taken a stroll along one of the local country lanes and at one point I’d stopped to gaze south at the hills.

This picture is the result of what I saw.

I was taken not only with the distance involved but also the gold of the field which had obviously recently been harvested. Then, dominating the foreground, was this plethora of brightly coloured weeds.

There was no-one about, and I remember being quite spellbound by the prevailing sense of quiet and the majestic magnificence of nature. Fortunately, I had my camera with me, and I seem to think it was around the late autumn of 2003.
